Hello! We Are Charm City Cakes West
After noticing an increase in demand for cakes west of the Mississippi, Baltimore’s Charm City Cakes has now opened a full-service bakery on the West Coast: Charm City Cakes West. Before we say too much about who we are and what we are doing, we’d like to tell you more about how and when we landed here.
Go West Young Man.
Last Spring, Duff hopped on his motorcycle with a will and a way – and lead the small, but determined crew of Anna, Katherine, Lauren, Jared, Mark, and Sean from their home in Maryland to the wondrous new land of California. Along with their personal belongings, the crew transported flour, sugar, pots, pans, screw-guns, lumber, and fireworks… you know, everything you need to make a cake, and make it awesome. Here’s a couple of pics from that fateful trip we’d like to share:
Since our arrival, two new people have joined our team: Beverly, our new Special Operations Manager, and Tim, a Hollywood and visual effects sculptor so talented he’ll make your head spin.
Now serving Los Angeles and the entire West Coast.
From an undisclosed location somewhere in Los Angeles, our team of decorators and cake artists have been hard at work creating are making some eye-popping, mouth-watering culinary creations. The best part about our move out west: all the very cool people we’ve met along the way.
Thanks everyone. We look forward to working with you!

Lauren’s recent work in the kitchen has been so pretty and so delicious that the cakes were just begging to be photographed.
This lovely plate of samples includes some classics and some personal favorites- Peanut Butter Cup, Blackberry Sour Cream, White Chocolate Raspberry, Almond and Carrot.

Great work Lauren!
Howdy ho! Here’s what’s happening!
Coming Monday, August 8th at 10:30 PM to the Food Network…Duff’s new show Sugar High! The premiere episode features Duff tooling around Los Angeles in search of the City’s most outrageously good desserts. Set your DVR’s because it’s a really funny and fun show!
Tweet It Out
Duff has finally gone and gotten himself a Twitter account. There was some confusion a couple weeks back because someone had been posting as @Duff_Goldman and pretending to be Duff, which was weird and creepy, but The Real Duff got that taken care of right quickly. So now you can read all about his wacky day-to-day antics and where he’s traveling to next and what 140-character thoughts are currently inhabiting his head. It’s good stuff, so follow him!
That’s it from the 410, my friends. Hope you’re all having a terrific summer!

Some of you may remember from way back in the way back machine Elena made a really super cute cake that was nicknamed the “Rambo Rubber Duckie”.
The story behind it was a sweet tale of love in the supermarket. Andy first noticed his sweetheart in the grocery store, and dubbed her “SMG” or, “Super Market Girl”. “SMG” also stands for “Sub-Machine Gun”. She had a penchant for rubber duckies and voila – the Sub Machine Gun Toting Girlie Rubber Duckie Cake was born. It was a big hit with Andy AND his girlfriend (now wife!).
Well, apparently this cake struck quite a chord with Ace of Cakes viewer Angela…she loved the mash-up so much she got a TATTOO of the Rambo Duckie Girl!
How cool is that!?! We’ve never seen a Charm City Cakes cake tattooed on anyone before, pretty flattering and amazing. Angela wanted to make sure to give props to the tattoo artist who did it, Chad Whitten at Forbidden Fruits Tattoo in Augusta, Maine.
Pretty fabulous, if you ask me.

Bon weekend, friends! Last night I was searching through our cake photo library for a particular picture. While I didn’t find the photo I was looking for, I did find some shots of some SUPER CUTE cakes from the last couple of weeks. This level of cute cannot be contained and must be shared.
First up – Mary Smith’s Angry Birds Ipad masterpiece! If you’re a fan of the terribly addicting game, you’ll appreciate how spot-on her figures of the birds are. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, just admire the cuteness.
Up next, Erica decorated this adorably original wedding cake, featuring lovely spring cherry blossoms and the best part – the bride and groom on top in ninja form, with their cats in kimonos. Love. It.
And finally – we’ve been very honored to have created the cake for Samson the Elephant for all three of his birthdays. Samson lives at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore and his birthday parties are always a big event! This year, Elena created his cake and the result was just adorbs.
Here is a great video of Samson eating his special-for-elephants cake and the crowd singing him “Happy Birthday”!
Well that’s enough cute for one Saturday morning. Hope you all are having a sweet and lovely weekend!
Happy Thursday, everybody!
I wanted to share some really gorgeous photos from a wedding we made two cakes for last summer. These photos are by the super talented and incredibly sweet Anne Sachs over at Artful Weddings by Sachs Photography. Anne was kind enough to pass the photos along and I just had to share them!
Ainsley and Stephen wanted an elegant wedding cake that incorporated their colors and was clean and simple. But they also wanted to have their adorable little dog Gracie “at” the wedding in some way. The result? A lovely modern cake that featured figures of Ainsley and Stephen chasing their troublemaking pup, who was getting away from them on the cake.
I just love the expression on Gracie’s little face! Licking her chops. So cute.
The couple also wanted a groom’s cake that reflected how they met – as students at West Virginia University. The school’s most well known building is Woodburn Hall, so we recreated the building in cake with the “PRT” (the tram system that students use to get around the school) carrying the bride and groom. It came out pretty sweet, but these photos really tell the story. I am in LOVE with these amazing and joyous reaction shots.
It doesn’t get much better than that! Thanks to Artful Weddings by Sachs Photography for sharing the photos. Their work is amazing – if you’re looking for a photographer check out their website. And thanks to Ainsley and Stephen for being such fun clients to work with!
Hope you’re all having a swell day!
